GRAMMAR

What is a sentence?

A sentence is a group of words that makes complete sense. A sentence normally has a subject and a verb. Every sentence must begin with a capital  letter.

Kinds of Sentences

a) Assertive sentences: They provide information and end with a full stop/period. They may also be written in the negative using words like 'no','not','none', 'nothing', 'never', etc.

E.g. Konuah was reading a book. (Affirmative)
      Konuah was not reading a book. (Negative)

b) Imperative sentences: They give instructions and end with a full stop (.).


E.g. Go to the garden now. (Affirmative)
      Don't question my authority. (Negative)


c) Interrogative sentences: They ask for information and end with a question mark (?).

E.g. Where is your classroom? (Affirmative)
      Don't you have a pen? (Negative)

d) Exclamatory sentences: They express sudden strong feelings and end with an exclamation mark (!).

E.g. What a beautiful school! (Affirmative)
      I can't believe we lost the match! (Negative)
